At the time I thought, wow this is so clear and brief, why is it not more popular? The two volumes provide material for a freshman-sophomore course in calculus in which linear algebra is gradually introduced and blended with the calculus. Still it is quite possible it does not have a huge number of exercises, so I would look at it and try reading and learmning something from it. This would serve admirably as the text for a course or as a tool for self-study.

Only when it was supplemented by a proper geometric proof would Greek mathematicians accept a proposition as true. Madhava of Sangamagrama and the Kerala School of Astronomy and Mathematics thereby stated components of calculus. This volume introduces many novel ideas and proofs. The reader will learn methods for finding functions that maximize or minimize integrals.

The text represents a serious effort to produce exposition that is accessible to a student at freshmen or sophomore levels. Applications of differential calculus include computations involving velocity and accelerationthe slope of a curve, and optimization. Calculations of volumes and areas, one goal of integral calculus, can be found in the Egyptian Moscow papyrus c. However it has Lang's special take on textbook writing. The ancient period introduced some of the ideas that led to integral calculus, but does not seem to have developed these ideas in a rigorous and systematic way. OK I have looked a bit online and it seems the book with that title today is 2 or 3 times as long as the one from with that same title.

Bernhard A first course in calculus. book used these ideas to give a precise definition of the integral. He can also skip completely over things you may well want to know, and give far fewer examples than needed to master a subject, especially in his famous algebra book, which also has been expanded by many pages from the's edition I A first course in calculus.

I hope that I have struck a proper com promise, between dwelling too much on special details and not giving enough technical exercises, necessary to acquire the desired familiarity with the subject.

Stroyan - Academic Press, Inc. The emphasis in this course is on problems -- doing calculations and story problems. In a treatise, Fermat is credited with an ingenious trick for evaluating the integral of any power function directly.

These questions arise in the study of motion and area. This nice book is likely to be especially successful. The text also includes historical notes that are fascinating to read.

The exposition starts with simple integrals containing a single independent variable, a single dependent variable, and a single derivative, subject to weak variations, but steadily moves on to more advanced topics, including multivariate problems, constrained extrema, homogeneous problems, problems with variable endpoints, broken extremals, strong variations, and sufficiency conditions.

This book I hope they will be able to acquire from it a good introduction at an early age. Finan - Arkansas Tech UniversityThese are lecture notes of a freshmen-level and sophomore-level mathematics class offered at Arkansas Tech University. The text is rigorous. Today, Leibniz and Newton are usually both given credit for independently inventing and developing calculus.
